Encrypt Your Storage Device(s) Using an Apple Computer

Special Notes
Depending on the size of the storage device, it may take some time for it to be encrypted
You may continue to use your computer which the encryption takes place
It is important to keep the recovery key in a safe place, as you will be unable to access the data without it
It is recommended you store the recovery key in a secure location with at least one location that is NOT the current computer
If you are not an administrator of your machine, you will need to contact the Help Desk to enter the administrator credentials
Directions
Click the Apple icon and select '
System Preferences
'
Enter '
FileVault
' in the search box
Click the padlock icon in the bottom left corner and enter the administrator's password when prompted then click '
Turn on FileVault

Select '
Create a recovery key and do not use my iCloud account
' then click continue
You will be presented with the new recovery key. Write it down and store it in a secure location then click '
Continue
'
Click '
Enable User
' for each user you want to have permission to unlock the drive and have them enter their password
Once you have selected the users you want to have permission, click '
Continue
' and the encryption process will begin
