Government mandated
Includes: qq, tiktok, wechat
Why: The federal or state government has mandated that these be blocked
Alternatives:
- Wait until you are home
- Use cellular networks
- Use 3rd party VPN (see remote access section on this page)
Peer-to-peer file sharing
Includes: (but not limited to) BitTorrent, emule, kazaa, qBittorrent, uTorrent, etc
Why: These applications are largely used for sharing copyrighted media.
Alternatives:
- Google Drive (provided to all students)
- OneDrive (provided to all faculty, staff, and students)
Notes:
- Don't share things illegally
Remote access applications
Includes: Anydesk, LogMeIn, Parsec, Splashtop, Tailscale, TeamViewer, Wireguard, Zerotier
Why: These applications permit remote access into UTC's network through an unapproved method
Alternatives:
- If you want remote access to UTC's network, use the UTC VPN.
- If you want remote access to an external system, use a traditional style VPN. (e.g. OpenVPN)
- If you want to do screen sharing and/or remote control, use Zoom as the officially provided and supported application
Notes:
- All traditional style VPNs are not blocked, including personal and 3rd party. Only ones that also permit connections back in are blocked.
SMTP
Includes: Unauthenticated SMTP on port 25
Why: Port 25 is not authenticated and is widely misused by things like malware and spam hosts
Alternatives:
- Most mail providers support authenticated SMTP (port 465 or 587). This is the recommended way to send email.
