Transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11 Operating System
Microsoft will be ending support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. As of that date, Microsoft will no longer be administering security updates, non-security updates, free or paid assisted support options, or online technical content updates for the Windows 10. In anticipation of this deadline, IT will be gradually upgrading all Windows 10 devices to Windows 11 this year with an expected completion date of October 2025.
Rollout Schedule:
- February 2025: Windows 11 set to the default for newly purchased devices for UTC.
- April 2025:
- Communication to campus about the upcoming transition of existing devices to Windows 11 and Intune.
- Communication to departments about devices that don't meet the Windows 11 technical requirements.
- April - October 2025: Roll out of Windows 11 to UTC owned faculty and staff devices will begin this spring and continue into the Fall semester. Stay tuned as we reach out to departments to complete the upgrade to 11 and migrate devices to the InTune device management platform.
- May - July 2025: Roll out of Windows 11 to classroom and lab machines is scheduled for the summer of 2025 to minimize disruptions and complete the upgrade before Fall classes begin.
What is Windows 11?
Windows 11 is the latest Microsoft operating system and comes equipped with a range of new features and improvements:
- Enhanced Productivity: New intuitive interface and centered Start Menu for quick access to apps and documents.
- Improved Performance: Faster and more efficient with optimizations.
- Advanced Security: Stronger protection against cyber threats.
- Seamless Teams Integration: Easy connection with colleagues directly from the taskbar.
- Snap Layouts & Groups: Efficient multitasking and window organization.

Next Steps for Faculty and Staff:
The IT department will be reaching out to departments and employees to schedule your upgrade to Windows 11 and migration to our InTune device management platform. In the meantime, we recommend the following:
- Configure your device to utilize OneDrive to backup all your data to your UTC Microsoft account.
- Book an appointment here with our techs to have your device upgraded and migrated at your convenience.
- Review any older devices (pre-2019) to determine if they are still needed. IT will be contacting users directly in April 2025 about older devices that don't meet the requirements for Windows 11.
If you are currently using a Mac computer or device it is only affected by this transition if you also have a Windows extension on that device. Otherwise, no action is needed.
