October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and with AI becoming part of daily work and coursework, it’s a good time to remember how to use these tools safely.

The most important thing to remember is that the type of information you share matters. Even University-supported AI tools have restrictions.

The UT System provides the AI Hub, offering access to leading AI models, including ChatGPT, Claude and Grok, with additional privacy and security protections. Other University-supported options include UT Verse and Microsoft Copilot.

Before entering information into any AI tool, be cautious with:

  • Personal information, such as Social Security numbers
  • Student records and financial information
  • Health or medical information
  • Confidential research and restricted data, including CUI

A few simple reminders:

  • Start with University-supported tools. View the AI Tools at UT Guide.
  • Check the AI Matrix to understand what information is approved for each tool.
  • Review privacy settings and avoid sharing unnecessary personal or University information.

Even the AI Hub has limitations. HIPAA-protected information and CUI should not be entered into the AI Hub.

When in doubt, check before you share. Contact the UTC IT Help Desk at ithelp@utc.edu with questions.
