Individual Objectives Guidelines
Your objectives should identify all activities to be undertaken during the year being evaluated. These objectives are understood to be goals that extend beyond the routine responsibilities of all faculty. Such responsibilities are outlined in the Faculty Handbook. See, for example, Chapter 2, including Section IX “General Statement of Student-Related and Professional Responsibilities of Faculty.”
Instructional Activities/Teaching
Your objectives in teaching should provide specific measures that will be taken to improve course delivery or content for your expected teaching schedule. Objectives could also include anticipated development of new courses and/or professional development plans in teaching.
Examples include:
“I intend to improve my coverage on unit XX by doing YY”
“I intend to implement online homework”
“I intend to flip my classroom”
“I intend to keep a teaching log to keep track of improvements needed.”
Assigned Advisees and Advisement Responsibilities
Your objectives in advising/mentoring should indicate the ways you intend to assist students outside of class for career development, research development, internship placement, or curriculum planning. Additional details that could be provided are the number of advisees officially assigned and/or the number of letters of recommendation you typically write each year.
Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activities
Your objectives in research and creative activities should include specific details on how you intend to advance work on research or creative projects. Your objectives could also include plans for professional development in research and creative activities such as planned conference attendance.
Please note that research and creative activities objectives are not required for non-tenure track positions but can be listed if desired.
Professional Service Activities
Your objectives in service should address planned participation in the service of the department, the university, the community, and/or the profession. Your objectives could include other service obligations you intend to complete such as participation in recruiting and retention in the department.
