Body
The University contributes $1,400 towards a new device for each eligible Faculty or Staff member. This page can be used as a guide for selecting a UTC Computer Refresh recommended configuration and accessories. Departments are responsible for the cost difference between the computer refresh contribution cost and the final cost of the selected device and accessories.
Please note the following:
- Prices listed are subject to change, and IT will confirm the final price with you, as well as any possible departmental charges, before placing an order. Please see the Computer Refresh Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) article for more details.
- Choice of device may impact what software is available for use. If you have software that is specific to a certain device type or Operating System, it is recommended that your new device is of the same device type/OS as your previous device (Old MacBook --> New Macbook or Old Dell/Windows laptop --> New Dell/Windows laptop) to avoid any incompatibilities.
- If the standard configurations below do not meet your requirements, please reach out to the Information Technology team. We would be pleased to collaborate with you to find and purchase a system that meets your needs.
A special note with regard to iMacs:
We recommend Mac minis and Mac Studios over iMacs for several reasons:
- Repair Complexity: iMac repairs are more challenging and time-consuming, often requiring visits to local repair shops rather than being shipped directly to Apple. This leads to longer downtimes compared to Mac minis or MacBooks.
- Networking Issues: iMac's Ethernet connection is in the power brick, causing network disruptions when power bricks are swapped between users.
- Hardware Consistency: Mac minis offer the same hardware performance as iMacs without the additional accessories, ensuring users don't miss out on performance.
- Port Availability: Mac minis offer a wider variety of ports, including USB-A, USB-C (Thunderbolt), Ethernet, and HDMI, which better suits user needs. The M2 Pro Mini adds even more USB-C ports.
- Cost Efficiency: Mac minis paired with monitors are more affordable, helping departments avoid overages, unlike the more expensive iMacs.
We've been promoting Mac minis and Mac Studios for about a year, and our campus partners appreciate these models. We pair them with high-quality 4K monitors that match the iMac's resolution.
