YuJa Verity: What It Is and How to Use It

YuJa Verity is an automated online test proctoring platform integrated directly into Canvas. Its purpose is to help maintain academic integrity during online assessments and protect the value of students’ grades.

Unlike live proctoring services, YuJa Verity does not involve someone watching you in real time while you take an exam. Instead, the platform records your testing session and uses AI-assisted review tools to flag specific behaviors or events—such as an unrecognized ID, a second person entering the room, or other unusual activity—for your instructor to review after the exam has been completed.

Privacy and Compliance

YuJa Verity is fully FERPA-compliant. Exam data is encrypted and stored securely, and only authorized UTC personnel and your instructor can access proctoring recordings.

The software is active only during a proctored Canvas assessment. It cannot access your computer outside of an exam session, monitor your files, or track your activity in the background when you are not actively taking a test.

Supported Browsers and Devices

YuJa Verity is supported on the following browsers:

  • Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Brave
  • Opera

Important device limitations

  • Chromebooks (Chrome OS) and Linux devices are not supported by the Verity Desktop Lockdown App.
  • On Chromebooks, only the browser extension is supported.

Campus resource

If you do not own a compatible device, you can check out a laptop from the UTC Library. Library laptops support installation of the lockdown application and include both a camera and microphone.

Installation

To use YuJa Verity, install the Verity Browser Extension from your browser’s extension store.

Depending on your device, you may also need to install the Verity Lockdown App.

Important Setup Steps Before an Exam

Enable Incognito or Private Mode permissions

This is a critical step. You must go to your browser’s extension settings and turn Allow in Incognito (or the equivalent private browsing permission) ON for the YuJa Verity extension. The extension will not function correctly without this setting enabled.

Mac users: allow Screen Recording

If you are using a Mac, you must grant Screen Recording permission by going to:

System Settings > Privacy & Security

Without this permission, YuJa Verity may not work properly.

Troubleshooting Tips

If you run into issues before or during an exam, try the following steps.

Restart your computer

Restarting your device before an exam can clear background memory and improve performance.

Close unnecessary applications

Fully quit programs such as:

  • Teams
  • Discord
  • Microsoft Word
  • Any other background apps

On a Mac, make sure you use Quit from the top menu bar rather than simply closing the window.

Check camera and microphone permissions

If the diagnostic check fails, confirm that your browser and the YuJa Verity app have permission to use your camera and microphone.

Be patient during startup

Initialization can take up to one minute. If YuJa Verity appears stuck for more than two minutes, refresh the page or restart your computer.

Ending the session

Submitting your Canvas quiz automatically ends the proctoring session and recording.

Additional Troubleshooting Steps

If problems continue, try these steps in order:

  1. Clear your browsing history and cached data in a supported browser such as Chrome, Edge, Brave, or Opera.
  2. Delete the YuJa Verity browser extension and reinstall it.
  3. Delete any previously downloaded YuJa Verity Lockdown App files and reinstall the app.
  4. Try a different supported browser.

If you have not already tried them, Brave and Opera are both available for Mac and Windows and may work better in some cases.

The most common issues are usually related to missing browser permissions, outdated installations, or conflicting background applications.
